The Point - a quiet read in a noisy world
An independent, self-published magazine journal set within the rich cultural history and natural beauty of what is now the North Devon World Surfing Reserve. Reflecting on what it means to be by the sea, from the purlieus of the Point to the coast of Croyde and out into the surfing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, one question I’m asked and I ask is:
So, What’s the Point?
In terms of use, what value has it as a magazine, as a commodity, as a product, as an object, as a thing? For me, as the maker, the use value is to convey an affinity with the sea, the surf and the coast, and in presenting the projects of the Point, I hope people begin to ask, what does he mean?
Hi Mark,
So what are my first impressions? Well I love it! The quality of the photographs, the stories and the finish is brilliant. I really felt strangely part of the local Croyde surfing community by the end of it. I hope it is appreciated in Croyde.
As for advice, I just don't know. As it is, I think it is great. A really good platform for yours and local photographers work. If it were to expand and attract more photographers/readers it will surely need to either focus on other surf areas or stay local but allow other non-surfing related issues to be included. This is starting to enter the realm of publishing and surfing, neither of which I am really qualified to talk about.
The photographs, layout, design, and feel of the magazine is brilliant. I really was compelled to look at every page!
As a concept I think it is brilliant. I love photojournalism. Text to provide a context then let the images do the talking. I do think there is scope for more quality photojournalism magazines. I would like to see The Point expand to include other subject matter. Perhaps other local heroes? High quality voyeurism of the everyday.
Looking forward to next years.
Keep in touch. All the best
